WORKSHOP: SOUND TRACK PRODUCTION FOR THE MOVING IMAGE (evaluation)

I worked with Bella Francis. We were to pick a short clip from a film or television programme and analyse the sound effects and the music. Whether or not they were diegetic or non diegetic, identifying sound bridges (sounds which link from one scene to another), synchronous sounds, whether or not they added mood and or meaning to the clip etc.
As a class we watched a few clips from various movies and analysed the sound effects and music to further understand the concept of the task. After watching 3-4 film clips we split up into our various groups.
Bella and I chose to analyse a clip from the famous action movie UNDERWORLD AWAKENING; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjcpygnnO_E

As part of the task the two categories were divided amongst us. Bella concentrated on the sound effects and I on the music. To achieve a grade we were to present our findings to the class which we had done and we received feed back and used it in the individual task that followed.

The objective of the Individual Task 2 was to analyse the spoken word, sound effects and the music. We were to analyse two clips which we own or have access to. I analysed scenes from the movie Transformers and the popular television programme burn notice. The results of this task can be found on my blog.

Task 2 Moving Image Sound Track Report

MOVIE TITLE: TRANSFORMERS (Opening Scene: Base Attack)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEfiR2asOJ4

Spoken Word: This scene contained mass amounts of conversation, the first main conversations are all formal. This introduces the audience to a world of authority and organisation. The dialogue involves soldiers talking to a senior officer on a military base. All the accents are american, you can clearly see that all the men are American Patriots, they are all speaking formally, this shows the audience who carries more authority among the characters and it dictates the seriousness of the situation. Another conversation takes place in the same scene between one of the soldiers and his wife. This introduces the audience to a different emotion, a more happy mellow family friendly scene. Of a solider talking to him wife and baby, it is a video call, that show cases a sense of realism in the movie. This mood doesn't last long once the base in under attack you can see that the characters are not happy, there is a scramble of network and they call out to one another as they loose signal. The audience has to feel sorry for the soldier beca because of an unknown source of energy, the dialogue changes along with the mood, panic and disbelief.

Music: The music creates tension, it prepares the audience for action. At first it is slow pace, matching the sound of the helicopter. The sound is synchronous, the music matches the action that is going on. The music then changes and becomes more friendly when the family is on. This sets the mood for a more family friendly scene.
The music then changes back to more war-like music putting the audience back on edge. The music gets louder and stops as the action begins. The music continues as the characters establish that they are under attack. The music matches the mood of the scene. It creates tension especially in bits where it pauses this indicates the severity of the situation. All the music in the scene is non diegetic.

Sound Effects: The helicopter noises, the typing and the mumbling in the office are all diegetic sounds, they people in the film can hear them as well as the audience. All the sounds are realistic. During the video call, the background noises on the other end of the line included the sound of birds chirping. A more surreal environment for the mother and her child, showing the audience that they are well away from what is coming.
Other sounds included robotic sounds, cocking and loading guns, explosions etc, all these sounds were diegetic showing the audience that they are in the middle of a war.

SERIES TITLE:BURN NOTICE
Spoken Word: The main voice is a voice over of the main character who is not in the scene explaining whats going on. He is telling the audience why the team is going about the heist in that manner. This is non diegetic since he is not part of the scene the only people that can here him is the audience. This helps them understand what is going on in the scene. Behind the voice over, a conversation between the characters on the scene. You can tell by the manner in which they are talking that they know one another and have for a long while. One line includes them reminiscing something that happened in their past. When the heist is completed the person they have thwarted, you can tell they are angry by there tone of voice. He is not familiar with the people he just come into contact with. As for the good guys they use sarcasm and irony in their speech you can tell that they feel in control of the situation. This shows the audience that they have done what they came to do and confident that it has worked out.

Music: There is only non diegetic background music in the scene. The music creates intense suspense. The audience is kept on edge and as the action increases the music matches the scene and it creates a sense of excitement and thrill for the audience. When ever the characters in the scene spoke the music was muted. Apart from when the voice over is talking. But the music is constant through out the rest of the scene and the pace settles down once the heist is completed.

Sound Effects: The sound effects in the scene included people in the back ground. These sounds were diegetic. There was a non diegetic noise whenever the scene would change. This can be notified as a sound bridge because the sound links one scene to another. Other sounds included tires screeching, engines roaring and car doors slamming. These sounds were mainly for the audience but they were diegetic sounds.

These sounds did add mood and meaning to the scene such as excitement, thrill and tension. These are realistic sounds, these are sounds that you would expect to hear if this was going on in real life. Obviously it wouldn’t be as loud, but the volume of the sound effects adds on to the mood that the scene is set up to make the audience feel. Most if the diegetic sound effects are just to add a sense if realism to the programme.

EVALUATION M.E.S

I worked in a group along side Sabrina Yaaqub and Isabella
Francis. In our group we didn't split the roles up as much. We came together an collectively decided what we would do as a short dramatic skit. In terms of characters all of us had a role. We were playing three sisters whose father had just died and had come together to read the will. We aske Roshin, a member of our class to help us record the scene.
SETTING
We were told to use settings on school grounds, so we choose the college café, which is a suitable place for three ladies to come together to discuss. The space is open and vast to allow room for expression. The round tables make it look more communal.

COSTUME
One of the sisters is Muslim even though they were all Christian at one point (which was established in the performance) she was fully clothed in Muslim attire. Another on of the sisters was to be depicted as spoilt. We used a portable tablet device as a prop for her persona. And the eldest sister was getting married, she wore a diamond ring on her finger.
Another prop used was the envelope in the centre of the table. That which had the fate of the girls inheritance with in it.

LIGHTING
Even though the three girls father had just died we used high key lighting to show case the irony. They were there to see what they could gain from their fathers death they were not really upset. Also we used it to display comedy because at the end of the scene all their fighting was for not because at the end of the day, they got nothing.

PERFORMANCE
In the beginning of the scene all the girls are soft spoken because they are talking about their fathers death. The scene opens with a prayer, giving off the impression of a communal religious family. But one of the sister is dressed in Muslim attire, so you can see the dysfunction. The way the girls are sitting, the oldest and more mature sister is seated upright, hands on the table showing her authority and dominance over the other two. The second sister is seated in the middle, showing that she is the middle child, out of place and different to the other two. And the youngest sister is slouched and sort of facing away showing that she couldn't care less about her two sisters and just came to get her inheritance.
As the skit progressed, voices are raised, you can sense the tension between the sisters, but you can still see that the older sister dominates because she is able to calm them down.

I felt that we could have done more with our props and costumes to make a better and shorter skit, less dialogue could have been used and more close ups to establish facial expressions and the individual moods of the three girls. Over all I was pleased with the end result. We utilised the props we had available very well and we maximized our performance to create a clearer story.

The narrative was clear, and I think the framing and camera angles helped make it better. It was clear that all their lives they didn't get along, they resent each other and that was clear in the dialogue.

THE LIFT!!

The lift was an interesting but unorthodox documentary. It was only until we actually started watching it that i understood why it was called the lift.
It was about a man who was interviewing various people that entered a lift in a block of flats in east london that was about to get torn down. (I didn't know that until Morvelisa told us)
In the beginning of the interview, people didn't take to kindly to him. They thought he was weird they ignored his questions. But as the documentary progressed the tenants in the flat started to get used to him and he was even given a chair to sit on while filming inside the elevator.
I couldn't exactly tell who the target audience for the documentary but what i can say is that i think that it appeals to an alternative audience.A variety of people can be into it, depending on what they are into.

WORK SHOP

VOICE OVER WORK:
For this particular task I was paired up with Ryan Nolan we were to create voice overs for a scene of our choice.
We chose a scene from the movie Transformers.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUyXE4D5Ouc
We chose this scene because it is short and seemed simple enough to do also because I have a broad outline of what this film is about.
The point of view of the narration is taken from the yellow car known as bumblebee who is one of the autobots. He is describing what he is doing and why he is doing it. Ryan will be doing the narration and I wrote the script.
Phase two was actually putting the voice over and the clip together and it came out like this.
We did the entire voice over in one take, via iMovie, there was no need for any editing.

After seeing the actual footage from the task in class and receiving some constructive criticism, I can say that I am pleased with the result however the space between some of the voice over lines was quite long there was more that we could have added but overall, this is a standard piece of work.

BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE:
Before watching the film I read the epilogue. My initial opinion of the movie was that it will be about the pros and cons of owning, using and selling fire arms. Where the cons out weigh the pros. Reason being the director Michael Moore is an Activist so my initial expectation is that he will be against the legal use of own and distributing guns.

In terms of content I felt that the film will contain a lot of interviews reason being Michael Moore will need to get opinions from a variation of people to find out what their views are opposed to him. I also expected there to be archive footage of how the Government and people of America have taken towards arms. Be it in the home or in law enforcement et cetera.

I expected there to be a hint of humour as Michael Moore is know to be a witty director. So I expected elements of irony and sarcasm even though the topic at hand in the documentary is quite sensitive. I also expected images of protests and violence because weapons and arms usually result in or are a result of violence and protests.

I expected a lot of footage to be shown about politicians. Especially between democrats and republicans. The are the two main political parties in America and the NRA are part of the Democratic law so people who follow this party will be for the gun laws.

After watching the film, there where a lot of elements that I didn't expect, but majority of them where among my exceptions. The documentary was quite long but it was very educational and it did have the potential to broaden ones view about the arms laws in the States.

The movie contained a lot of interviews. The interviews where all conducted by Michael Moore and he interviewed a variety of people. The victims of the gun rights in different states in the country where interviewed, people who are pro the arms laws, NRA supporters, Charlton Heston, the principle and a teacher in Buel, Students who were victims of the incident at Columbine and Marylin Manson where among the main people interviewed.

The topics handles where all based on fact, containing clear and precise subject matter with various opinions about the main topic.

There was a lot of archive footage of various wars that have happened because of America and incidents that have taken place with in the country. For example 9/11, The Vietnam wars etc. There was also footage of various dictators for example Hitler and on of the former Chinese presidents.

The film also contained some actual footage. For example the CCTV footage from with in the Columbine cafeteria and library during the incident. Also played where various 911 calls to the police about the Columbine incident and the incident in Buel.

Various footage of rally's and protests held by victims of the columbine incident where shown. For example on of the parents of a boy who was killed during the columbine held a protest to honour his son and other victims.

There was also a humorous re enactment of the television programme Cops which Michael Moore called Co operate Cops about the criminals in "suits." There was also an animated re enactment of the history of violence that America has.

Finally through out the film the voice over/narration was done by the director Michael Moore himself.

Task 1: Moving sound image quiz
1a) Name the three main elements of moving image sound tracks.
- Spoken word
- Sound  effects
- Music
1b) Summarise the difference between diegetic and non diegetic music and give an example for each
Diegetic sound is that which is in the world of the film, this means that the characters of the movie can here it. For example characters in a conversation with one another. Non diegetic sound is sound which is put into the film after the editing process. This is for the audience. For example back ground music, voice overs etc. Like in The Tranformers Trilogy the voice of Optimus Prime delivers a voice over in the beginning and the end of each three films.
1c) Summarise the difference between synchronous and non synchronous sound effects and give an example of each.
Synchronous sound is that where the sound is in perfect timing with the object or character producing the sound for example lip syncing. While non synchronous/asynchronous  sound is when the sound and the object or character which it is coming from do not match. For example in The animated movie The Simpsons, as Homer the leading character and Marge rode away on his motorcycle and shared a kiss, there was music in the background which didn't match the scene but was played to set the mood for the audience.
1c) List at lest three different types of spoken word in film audio with an example of each and post links of these examples on to your blog.
Dialogue refers to conversations by the characters in the film is a form of diegetic sound. For example in the movie Shrek, when Shrek and donkey where on their way to rescue the princess from the tower they engaged in a two man conversation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-TZNGaktP0
Voice over is where a voice from the outside gives the audience information on the story and sometimes it is a character in the story. For example in the Television programme Scrubs the main character John Dorian delivers voice overs that tell the audience about the lessons learnt in the programme.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLsyUZ2nGbo.
Sound mixing refers to mixing sound fro various sources using a multi track desk. Much of the dialogue can be remixed afterwards because the spoken words are recorded afterwards. For example in Transformers Two when the main character was injured a lot of the sound was mixed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRccnYPNgLE (unfortunately I was unable to find a clear version)
