Initial Interview Research

Community Affected By The Issue
Shadism is alive globally amongst the black community. It refers to the act of being Racist towards one own race. Although this documentary is solely focused on the black community; Asians, Hispanics and other races are also affected by shadism, however it is more evident in the black community.
The Light-skinned/Dare-skinned wars have really taken a toll, mostly due to the influence of social media, and general media. In the media today, it is believed to be more profound if a black person is fair skinned rather than dark skinned this is because it is thought to be unattractive. This has really dumbed down societies already ignorant and stereotypical way of thinking, about how blacks are lesser people but now, it looks as though the darker blacks are lesser people even though according to other races we are all ONE people BLACK people. In the West African community countries like Nigeria and Ghana have taken to having females artificially inseminated with sperm from White donors in order to have their children coming out of the womb fairer skinned.

Elements of Issue
In the UK some of the relevant links to Shadism include the television programme The X-Factor. On the internet and in newspapers the audience of the programme have been accused of being racist toward darker skinned individuals. This is evident with the most recent X Factor contestant Hannah Barret. Headlines reading TOO DARK TO WIN THE X FACTOR and HOW TO SURVIVE THE X FACTOR IF YOU ARE BLACK. Social networks like Twitter Vine Facebook and Instagram also have an influence on these stereotypes using hastags such as DARK SKINNED/LIGHT SKINNNED N&$$AS BE LIKE. Also upon further inspection in the Daily Mail, an event called The Battle Of The Complexions was being advertised.
